Galapagos, September and Sea Lion Pups

By: .JohnSmith.

Are you planning on visiting the Galapapos and trying to decide when to visit? Well, if you want to see newborn sea lion pups (as in LOTS of newborn sea lion pups), then September is the time for you to visit the Galapagos Islands.

Our September visit was pretty much accidental since we needed to coordinate the tour departure time with the use of frequent flyer miles for our air. It was the only time that the two things worked together. And we lucked out.

I have to admit that the springtime is also an excellent time to visit. If you love the water, it is much warmer in the springtime due to the change in currents coming up from the Antarctic. Swimming and snorkeling is very comfortable without a wetsuit. The skies are also much clearer and the days are sunnier and hotter.

But you?ve got to go in the Fall if you want to see newborn sea lion pups. We saw some very young ones, including newborns, on every landing. Their antics are fun to watch and we could have stood on the beach for hours. There is a rule to maintain your distance from the sea lions but, obviously, nobody told the sea lions. They would consistently wander up to inspect us. One pup even took a liking to my sandals and tried to take a nip out of one of them (while still on my feet). They were definitely a highlight of our trip.
